Tues - Sat 11 – 19
Closed Sundays and holidays
Opening Tuesday 19 November, 18.00, at Galleria Paolo Curti/Annamaria
Gambuzzi & Co the first exhibition in a private gallery by Marcella
S. Nelson.
Marcella S. Nelson was born in 1955 in New York, where she lived
until 1996, when she moved to Brussels.
Inspired by the exhibition “Autissier et le portrait miniature
romantique en Belgique”, she decided to work on the smallest
possible scale.
The format of her work is that of a standard ID photo (appx. 5 x
4.5 cm).
Marcella starts with ID format photos to create her miniature
portraits, reproducing the subjects in oil on canvas. An obsession
that leads her to spend hours and hours painting with the thinnest
brushes, achieving a total resemblance between the painting and the
photograph.
Visitors to the gallery can have their portrait painted…
An automatic ID-photo machine will be placed in the gallery for
those who wish to have their portraits painted in miniature, with
the skill and ability of a “Flemish master”.
In one year of patient, painstaking work Marcella completes about
35-40 portraits.
