The exhibition by Francesco Clemente opens on 18 January 2005 at Galleria Paolo Curti/Annamaria Gambuzzi & Co. in Milan.

The show features many works made from 1977 to 1990 using a range of different techniques: for the most part pastels on paper from the first half of the 1980s, but also works in oil, gouache, charcoal. The artist’s versatile use of different expressive media is directly connected to the kaleidoscope of cultures that coexist in his personality: born in Naples, he has led a mobile existence in Italy, India and the United States; between the polymorphic vitality of Indian culture and the New York “melting pot” he delves into the idea of the accidental nature of the world as creative force, maintaining a detachment with respect to subjects and materials that allows him to freely explore and express his experience of the world in painting and drawing. His works often evoke his own physical presence, his body seen as an instrument through which a relationship of osmosis is established between the creative Self and the rest of the world, the Other-than-Self: the artist is his own body through which, in a constant interplay of inner and outer, physical and psychic, relations are created among different cultures, histories, thoughts.

Born in Naple sin 1952, the artist lives in New York.
Francesco Clemente has shown his drawings and works on paper in many solo exhibitions all over the world, including: Neue National Galerie, Berlin (1984-85); Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Basel (1987-89); Museum of Art, Philadelphia (1990); Royal Academy of Arts, London (1991); Musée National d’Art Moderne Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (1994-95); Galleria d’Arte Moderna, Bologna (1999). A major retrospective has been held at the Guggenheim Museum of New York (1999-2000) and in Bilbao (2000).

Si inaugura martedi’ 18 Gennaio 2005 presso la galleria Paolo Curti/Annamaria Gambuzzi & Co. di Milano la mostra di Francesco Clemente.

Saranno presentate in questa occasione numerose opere dal 1977 al 1990, eseguite con diverse tecniche: si distinguono per quantità i pastelli su carta realizzati nella prima metà degli anni ’80, ma compaiono anche l’olio, la gouache, il carboncino. Il poliedrico utilizzo di mezzi espressivi differenti adottato dall’artista è direttamente legato al caleidoscopio di culture che albergano simultaneamente nella sua personalità: nato a Napoli, conduce un’esistenza migrante tra Italia, India e Stati Uniti; tra la multiforme cultura indiana e il melting-pot newyorkese é portato a concepire l’accidentalità del mondo come forza creativa, mantenendo un’indifferenza verso soggetti e materiali che lo rende libero di sbizzarrirsi e di sintetizzare la sua esperienza del mondo nella pittura e nel disegno. Nelle opere è spesso evocata la presenza fisica dell’artista, del suo corpo come strumento attraverso il quale si stabilisce una relazione osmotica tra l’Io creativo e il resto del mondo, l’Altro da Sé: l’artista è il proprio corpo attraverso cui, in uno scambio costante tra interiore ed esteriore, tra fisico e psichico, si creano relazioni tra culture, storie, pensieri diversi.

Francesco Clemente ha esposto i propri disegni e lavori su carta con numerose mostre personali in tutto il mondo: Neue National Galerie, Berlino (1984-85); Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Basilea (1987-89); Museum of Art, Philadelphia (1990), Royal Academy of Arts, Londra (1991), Musée National d’Art Moderne Centre Georges Pompidou, Parigi (1994-95), Galleria d’Arte Moderna, Bologna (1999).
